Chiropractic & Back Pain

Today Chiropractic care is much more than a way of seeking relief from back pain. Chiropractic is a mainstream healthcare profession serving the needs of thousands of UK patients. Health insurers and the medical profession all recognise the contribution of Chiropractic to healthcare. The principle of Chiropractic is based primarily upon the relationship between the spine and the nervous system and the many and varied problems that may result from their dysfunction.

How it Works

Chiropractic is based on the scientific fact that our nervous systems control the function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. While the brain is protected by the skull, the spinal cord is more vulnerable, covered by 24 moving vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal motion or position, they can irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the function of the tissues or organs these nerves control, and this is called vertebral subluxation complex.

Chiropractic is the science of locating these areas of spinal malfunction and the art of correcting them to allow the body to heal itself (homeostasis). To do this chiropractors use a technique called an adjustment. An adjustment is a carefully executed manoeuvre that usually results in a joint clicking as a sticky joint is released. Adjustments are generally painless. They can be enjoyable, because of usual improved mobility, and other health benefits are noticed soon after. Because chiropractic is about allowing the body to heal itself, it does not include the use of drugs or surgery. Patients who require such intervention are referred for medical care. If you have a concern about your health or have sustained an injury, feel free to call us to find out if chiropractic can help you.

Your First Visit

Before making a diagnosis and adjusting a patient's spine, a chiropractor will undertake a health history and a thorough examination so he/she has a full understanding of your health status.

Some of the questions and procedures may seem irrelevant, but remember when one part of your body has a problem, usually all other parts of your body are affected to some extent as well. The information will help to ensure a safe effective programme of Chiropractic treatment is designed especially for you. Don't hesitate to ask questions. It is your right to be informed.

This examination may also include an X-ray when clinically indicated.

Your chiropractor may then use one of several natural or non-invasive treatment approaches, including; manual treatments, physical therapy modalities, exercise programmes, nutritional advice, orthotics, lifestyle modifications and other patient education. They will also, where appropriate, collaborate and/or refer you to other health providers.

*All Chiropractors must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council to legally call themselves Chiropractors. People can only become registered if they have completed an accredited degree level training course.
